Disney Area

History

Walt Disney World is situated in Lake Buena Vista, a city in Orange County, Florida. The other Florida municipality handled by The Walt Disney Company is Bay Lake. Lake Buena Vista is included in the Orlando-Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area.

On May 12, 1967, Governor Claude R. Kirk, Jr. signed into law Chapters 67-1965 of the Laws of Florida (of which the City of Reedy Creek was being incorporated), 67-764 (institution of the Reedy Creek Improvement District), and 67-1104 (incorporation of Bay Lake City). Walt Disney Company was given powers to control the city.

Another chapter, 69-1527, became a law on July 3, 1969 though it did not have the consent of the governor. The law redefined the city bounderies. The city was moved, and some parts of Bay Lake City (including the unincorporated lands) were taken over. On the same day, Chapter 69-836 became a law as well. Thereafter, the name of City of Reedy Creek was changed to City of Lake Buena Vista. The new name was derived from the name of a street in Burbank, California.

The Reedy Creek Improvement District was given all the powers that a city should have, thus it was met with controversy as to why it should be necessary to incorporate cities inside. Original plans designed by Walt Disney was to include a living area (“community of the future), but it was never established. Some of the ideas were assimilated into the EPCOT theme park and the Celebration. The residents in the city are Disney employees. Specifically, they reside in a small neighborhood in Royal Oak Court.

Getting There

Tourists on plane will fly into Orlando International Airport. Almost all major US airlines serve the airport. Another alternative is the Orlando-Sanford International Airport, which is a bit far from the Walt Disney World. The airport receives flights from Iceland and the United Kingdom.

Tourists by car can access Walt Disney World via I-4. Florida Turnpike is also another road alternative, especially when driving from south points like Miama. If tourists arrive from Port Canaveral, Florida State Road 528 will connect you to I-4.

Tourists also have another option: by train. Orlando and Kissimmee are served by the Amtrak’s Silver Service (Miami-New York City). Also, Sanford to Lorton, Virginia are served by Auto Train.

Tourists who want to travel by bus also have the following options:
*Disney Magical Express – a popular options for guests in resort hotels in Disney. Free transportation is available to and from the airport, though it is imperative to book services ahead.
*Disney Cruise Line – has the same bus services, serves between Walt Disney resort hotels and Port Canaveral terminal. It has a one-way fare of $35/person, but if you book a land-and-sea package, the price is included.
*Mears Transportation – aside from running Disney’s bus lines, they also have their own buses and town cars for transportation of any local attractions.
*Greyhound – long-distance bus serving Orlando and Kissimmee, which is nearer to the Walt Disney World.
*LYNX – service by Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority. Nine routes serve Walt Disney World and the adjacent places.
