Titusville

History

Named after Col. Henry T. Titus, the city of Titusville was founded in 1867.

Orginally named “Sand Point”, Titusville was inhabited by Ais Indians. The indigenous tribe fished the Indian River and cultivated the land for cocoplum, seagrape berries and palmetto. Unfortunately, the tribe diminished due to slavery and infectious diseases brought by the Spanish.

In the 1800s, Titusville experienced growth in economy and population. Commercial shipping was established as well as the city’s first bank, newspaper, post office and two hotels. In 1891, electricity reached the city of Titusville followed by Henry Flagler’s railroad and an ice plant. Sadly, some of these developments were destroyed when the city suffered from a devastating fire.

After the World War II, the city’s economy and tourism grew highlighted by the establishment of the Kennedy Space Center. Shopping centers, motels, buildings, public hospital and golf courses are constructed to accommodate the growing number of visitors who want to explore the area. Today, the community of Titusville is not only home to Kennedy Space Center, but to an array of things to see and do for the whole family.
